An alcoholic is a person who suffers from alcoholism. Alcoholism occurs when a person shows signs of physical addiction to alcohol (for example, tolerance and withdrawal) and continues to drink, despite problems with physical health, mental health, and social, family, or job responsibilities.
Alcohol may come to dominate the person`s life and relationships. Hence, alcoholics or heavy drunkards are often advised to quit drinking to avoid severe detrimental effects of physical and mental health.

On the other hand, several studies suggest that moderate intake of alcohol may have some health benefits.

One study links alcohol to 1 in every 25 deaths worldwide and that 5% of years lived with disability are attributable to alcohol consumption
